Walking when it's dark outside can be dangerous. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 75 percent of pedestrian fatalities occur during hours of darkness.
Residents can stop by the New Castle Police Department and pick up a free pedestrian safety reflector. Officers will also be carrying reflectors in police vehicles to provide to pedestrians walking in dark areas.
These reflectors can be easily attached to clothing or items carried to help increase visibility while walking, according to a statement on the department's Facebook page. They can also be used on dog collars to make nighttime dog walking safer.
The safety reflectors are available while supplies last.
