Former Horace Greeley Dean Pleads Guilty On Drug Charges

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – A White Plains man and former Scarsdale High School guidance counselor and dean of students pleaded guilty Monday in state Supreme Court in White Plains on charges of cocaine use and hindering prosecution, according to a report by the Journal News.

David Mendelowitz, 59, is one of three suspects who have been charged with numerous counts of patronizing a prostitute, possession of a controlled substance, cocaine, and hindering prosecution. He was initially charged on Nov. 20, 2012.

As part of a plea agreement, he pleaded guilty Monday to two of those charges. He will avoid jail time, but was sentenced to five years of probation and must continue attending Alcoholics Anonymous. He must also submit to weekly drug tests.

He was caught as part of a 16-month investigation that led to a 180-count indictment that charged 19 individuals and one corporation – Somad Enterprises Inc. – with enterprise corruption and a variety of underlying crimes.

Mendelowitz was a guidance counselor at Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua from 1986 to 1997 before making his way to Scarsdale. During his tenure at Scarsdale, Mendelowitz was involved in various student programs, including the high school’s Drug and Alcohol Task Force.
