Father Struck, Killed By Vehicle On I-84 While Playing Catch With Son

A pedestrian who was struck and killed by a motor vehicle on I-84 in Orange County Saturday night has been identified and details of the accident have been released by state police.

The man was struck on the eastbound side in the Town of Wawayanda at around 8 p.m., just west of Exit 3E.

A vehicle was traveling in the right lane when the man, 35-year-old Nicholas Barba of the Bronx, entered the roadway from the north shoulder when he was hit by the passenger car, state police said. subsequently struck by the passenger vehicle.

Barba was transported from the scene and pronounced deceased at Orange Regional Medical Center.

The investigation revealed that Barba's vehicle was disabled on the south shoulder of I-84. While waiting for the tow truck to arrive, Barba was throwing a baseball around with his son and the ball errantly went across the roadway and into the median, according to state police.

As Barba was retrieving the ball from the median and attempting to cross back over I-84 east bound, he was struck by a vehicle in the right lane. 

The vehicle in question stopped at the scene and no charges are expected against the driver, state police said.
