Chappaqua, N.Y. -- The New Castle Police Department is urging motorists to stay off the roads on Tuesday.

"Motorists have become stranded in the labyrinth created by downed trees and power-lines," said Chief of Police Charles Ferry in a news release. "At this time the majority of New Castle roads are impassable and dangerous."

Ferry said that it was also too soon to tell when power would be restored to the town.

"We are in the early hours of restoration. It is simply too early to provide any time estimates. Residents should be prepared to be without power for an extended period," he said. "A limited number of crews are in New Castle clearing power lines and trees from roadways. Priority will be given to main thoroughfares first, secondary roads later."
