Robert T. Schumann, 57, of Chappaqua, was arrested after Deputy Andrew Kristan noticed he was intoxicated while investigating the accident, police said.
The deputy arrested Schumann and charged him with misdemeanor DWI after he failed a series of standardized field sobriety tests. The charge was upgraded to a felony after it was determined that Schumann had been previously convicted of DWI within a 10-year period, police said.
Schumann was arraigned before Town of Southeast Justice Richard Vercollone and committed to the Putnam County Correctional Facility in lieu of $750.00 cash bail, police said.
If found guilty of the felony charge, Schumann could face up to four years in jail and a fine of up to $5,000.00.
