Richard Alan Cowan, Sr., 77, School Teacher In Chappaqua

MAHOPAC, N.Y. - Richard "Dick" Alan Cowan, Sr., of Mahopac died Nov. 1. He was 77.

Cowan was born March 26, 1937, in Hackensack, N.J., and grew up in East Marion. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1960 with a degree in philosophy and went on to an over 30-year career as a school teacher in Central Islip, Pathogue and Chappaqua.

In his retirement, he was a woodworker and served as an historian, teacher, and director at the Century Museum Village at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds. He was a member of the Audubon Society.

Cowan is survived by his wife, Mary Ellis; sister, Alice Jester (Taylor) of Greenport; children, Richard Cowan, Jr. (Joanne) of Cassadaga, Janet Cowan (Mark Haber) of San Francisco, Calif., and Robert Cowan (Lela Nargi) of Brooklyn; stepchildren, Ross Alvord (Bébhinn) of Brewster, William Fleming of London, England, and Katherine Fleming of Brooklyn; and seven grandchildren.

Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5 and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6 at Beecher-Flooks Funeral Home in Pleasantville.
