Phil Pepe, Popular Yankees Beat Writer, Author, Dies At 80

Popular Yankees beat writer for the New York Daily News, Phil Pepe, died on Sunday, according to the Daily News. He was 80.

Pepe, who lived in Englewood, N.J., covered the Yankees for the Daily News from 1968-1981. In 1982 he became the Daily News' sports columnist, the Daily News reported. 

Pepe left newspapers in 1989 to do morning sports on WCBS radio, where he held his "Pep Talks" for 15 years. Pepe also wrote nearly 50 books, including biographies of Bob Gibson, Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford, the Daily News said.
