CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. -- Benjamin Francis Newton a former Westchester County resident, died on Tuesday, June 10, in Wilmington, N.C. He was 86.
Newton was born on Nov. 3, 1927 in New York City to Benjamin and Audrey Nash Newton and was raised in Pelham Manor. He served as a correspondent for the U.S. Army in Korea.
He lived most of his life in Pelham Manor, West Hartford, Conn., Chappaqua, and Wilmington, N.C.
Newton retired and lived in Wilmington, N.C., for the last 20 years. He volunteered extensively for the United Way. He also became a master gardener and volunteered at the New Hanover County Arboretum.
Newton had a long career as a personnel and human resource manager. His career included employment with Genesco, Heublein, H. J. Heinz, Dictaphone, and New Hermes. Among his many accolades the National Career Centers of America recognized him as “America’s most dynamic personality in the personnel and employment profession for 1975.”
He is survived by his daughters Suzanne Newton of Brewster, Mass., and Cynthia Newton of San Mateo, Calif.; grandchildren Gabriel Marino and Allison Alhadas of San Mateo, Calif; sisters Mary Jean Newton Booth (Ralph Booth) of Peterborough, N.H., and Audrey Newton Muller (James Muller) of Richardson, T.X.; and his beloved cat Willie.
He is predeceased by his former wife Patricia Copeland Newton and his brother, Harry Newton.
He was widely known to be witty, caring, and a lot of fun to be with and truly a people’s person. He loved to play golf and sail. He also loved to play bridge and poker.
A private memorial service will take place in Pelham Manor. The family requests that donations be made to the United Way of the Cape Fear Area or the New Hanover County Arboretum in his memory.
