Because of his excellent month, he has been named Chappaqua Daily Voice January Student-Athlete of the Month.
Wymbs is currently 30-5 this season and has 118 varsity wins. Wymbs surpassed three-rime Section 1 Division I champion Greg Einfrank, who had 115.
Along with his Shoreline title, Wymbs won the Beacon Tournament 195-pound championship and was selected as the most outstanding wrestler.
“It has been a great month for me,” Wymbs said. “I accomplished a few firsts, including being Coach (Mike) DeBellis’ first wrestler to get to 100 wins, win Shoreline and get the MOW at the Beacon tournament."
“Being the winningest wrestler at Greeley is great. When it was announced, I was surprised because I totally forgot it was the record-breaking match.”
Wymbs came into the season off a break-out junior year in which he was a Section 1 Division I finalist at 195 pounds. Wymbs is a prime contender for the 195-pound title this year, along with Yorktown’s Steven Sabella.
Following a good start in December, Wymbs raised his level in January. Wymbs was spending extra time prior to and after practice, working with assistant coaches Anthony Tortora and Dan Hall, both former Section 1 Division I wrestling champs.
“I’ve put a lot of time and work into wrestling, especially this month, and it feels good to see it pay off,” Wymbs said.
