CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. ? As it heads into the new year The Chappaqua Daily Voice will count down, in no particular order, the top 10 stories from 2012 .
The public hearing on a proposed mosque opened in June and immediately met resistance from many residents who were concerned with traffic, septic, lighting and noise that could come with 24,000-square-foot building at 130 Pinesbridge Road.
The zoning hearing was supposed to focus on environmental issues, but quickly turned into a discussion of diversity and religious tolerance.
The often off-topic conversation frustrated residents who were more concerned with environmental issues raised by the proposal.
The protest against the mosque went digital in July with the creation of www.denyUWMS.com . Upper Westchester Muslim Society Chair Ali Javed said he was disappointed to learn about the creation of the website and with residents' overall protest of the mosque.
The proposal was last heard from in October , and UWMS is in the process of preparing a Final Environmental Impact Study (FEIS) for the New Castle Zoning Board.
