Tappan Zee Constructors, the organization tasked with “the single largest bridge construction project in New York’s history,” announced that they were to limit marine operations on Friday, following nearly a foot of snow that fell in the Hudson Valley on Thursday.
While operations were limited, work on the landings of the bridge continued, as select personnel removed snow from all project locations. According to officials, contractors will “continue to monitor conditions and respond to any weather-related issues” that may have arisen from the recent snowfall.
Following the storm, Tappan Zee Constructor's have implemented their winter weather preparation protocols, which includes inspecting and adjusting all mooring lines, inspecting crane barges and securing all equipment, having tug boats on the water to provide rapid response, moving the large majority of cranes to shallow water moorings and taking all smaller crew boats out of the water.
Officials made note that contractors made a careful review of the project site to ensure that work could resume swiftly and safely for both the public and members working on the bridge.
Moving forward, Tappan Zee Constructors announced that they expect to connect the westbound main span and Rockland approach with a 750,000-pound section of steel next week, following the installation of a similar section last week, connecting the westbound main span and Westchester approach.
