Dozens of riders had to be evacuated from the popular carousel when a fire sparked at approximately 4:15 p.m. on Sunday, July 9 at Playland, prompting firefighters from several municipalities to respond to the scene.

The carousel suffered water damage, as well as damage to the roof and other components; however, it is believed that the ride can be fixed. None of the horses were damaged by the fire.

The fire was reportedly caused by an electrical issue.

No injuries were reported. Playland stayed open during the incident. The ride remains closed, but will be re-opened after it is repaired following this season. It is not immediately clear when the carousel will once again be open to riders. The carousel has been a mainstay in Westchester since 1928.
