NEW CASTLE, N.Y. -- After receiving a petition with signatures from more than 400 adults and 450 students, and letters of support from some 20 businesses, endorsing a proposal to eliminate single-use plastic bags in all stores, New Castle officials plan to move forward with the action, according to the Examiner.

Known as the Reusable Bag Initiative, which was proposed by the town’s Sustainable Advisory Board, the plan would also charge customers a 10-cent fee for paper bags. If approved, the measure would make New Castle the fifth town in Westchester County to pass a law regarding the use of plastic bags, said the Examiner

A public hearing will take place on Tuesday, May 24. If passed, the ordinance would still allow plastic bags to be used for meat, produce, prescriptions and other items, added the Examiner.
