Penalties Possible For Illegal Dumpster Users in Chappaqua

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. - Penalties may soon be coming for residents caught tossing personal garbage in private trash bins. Town officials have been informed by Chappaqua business owners that community members have been tossing trash in the South Greeley Avenue parking lot Dumpsters.

"We have an enforcement problem that we need to take care of," said Town Administrator Penny Paderewski at Tuesday night's Town Board Work Session.

After witnessing a resident use the Dumpster, Paderewski said one business owner took the liberty of combing through the garbage to identify the perpetrator.

"She doesn't live there. She lives on the different part of town," Paderewski said of the resident. "We will give penalties to people if they're doing something illegal."

While the trash bins are locked behind a fence, Paderewski believes residents have been throwing garbage bags over the top. Council member Robin Stout said adding a net above the Dumpsters might be necessary.

"It's not something I would have expected," said Stout.
