New York Fracking Ban Still Has Hurdles To Overcome

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo may have announced a ban on fracking throughout the state, but that doesn't put the issue to bed, according to NBC Buffalo.

The fracking ban won't really take effect until the Department of Environmental Conservation says so. In order for the DEC to formally enact the ban, it needs to complete the supplemental generic environmental impact statement, which over the last six years has actually recommended fracking in certain areas of New York, provided safeguards were put into place, NBC Buffalo reported. 

The manor in which the DEC changes the impact statement to reflect the new ban could also lead to lawsuits from those in support of fracking, NBC Buffalo said.
