NEW CASTLE, N.Y. – The Take it or Leave it Shed in the New Castle Farmers Market will reopen in November with some new rules in order for organizers to handle the increasing volume of donations, said New Castle Supervisor Rob Greenstein.

Now, residents have until 11:30 a.m. to leave items in the shed on the train station parking lot behind the Shell station. Operating hours are still Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.

Each family is allowed to deposit a maximum of two vehicle loads per week.

Residents and non-residents are free to take any items they want from the shed; however, only New Castle residents can leave items in the shed and volunteers may ask to see identification.

“While the concept of the Take it or Leave it is simple— to keep items that can be reused or re-purposed out of the waste stream, I’d like to think it has become more than that,” said Greenstein in a press release. “Over the past 13 years, it has evolved into a small community. We have been there for folks in good times and bad, and the shed is a friendly haven. When people are first moving into town, they can find things for their new homes that they will not have to buy.

"And when they are leaving, they know some of their treasures are going to be appreciated by their new caretakers.”

Items that may be accepted into the shed must be functioning, clean and gently used.

These items include small appliances, small furniture, kitchenware, home repair tools, sports equipment, toys and picture books for children.

Unacceptable items are mattresses, large appliances, refrigerators, air conditioners, TVs, monitors, stereo speakers, bedding, clothing, books, printers, faxes, electronics, chipped or cracked dishes, plastic containers, skis, stuffed toys, cribs, car seats and suitcases.
