CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. -- The New Castle Town Board unanimously approved a new refuse and recycling contract with SaniPro Disposal Services Corp., a deal that includes single-stream recycling and once-a-week garage pick up.

The town currently has dual stream recycling, according to Jennifer Mebes Flagg, who gave recommendations at the Town Board's Aug. 12 meeting on behalf of the town's Sustainability Advisory Board (SAB). Dual stream is where paper and cardboard are separated from plastic, glass and metal, she explained. Single stream, she said, is where everything is mixed.

Speaking for SAB, Flagg also voiced support for the town keeping once-a-week pick up, with cost, wear and tear to roads, and less noise and traffic being reasons.

The total amount of the contract, which starts on Jan. 1, 2015, is more than $1,908,570, according to the deal's approval resolution. This is a per-year drop of $477,980 from the old amount of $2,386,550, according to an announcement in the town's online newsletter . More than $3 million will be saved over seven years, according to the announcement.

There is also financial assistance for in-driveway/backdoor service for people 75 or older, according to the newsletter, which adds that for disabled residents it is 70 or older.
