New Castle Residents Prepare For Possible Nor'easter

NEW CASTLE, N.Y. - The already hard-hit New Castle could have an even longer recovery period with a nor’easter potentially bringing heavy winds, snow and rain to the area Wednesday.

Chappaqua received its first snowfall of the season Wednesday, and residents are preparing for possible power outages.

"Without any power not much you can do to prepare," said Beth Manners on The Chappaqua Daily Voice's Facebook page. "It's already 43 degrees in the house."

An estimated 3,199 out of 6,574 customers in New Castle were without power as of 2 p.m. Wednesday, according to Con Edison reports.

Allan Drury, public affairs manager for Con Ed, said the storm could bring even more power outages and blocked roads, especially with a large tree canopy like New Castle has. He said heavy winds will make it difficult for workers to continue any restoration efforts.

On Wednesday night, rain, snow and sleet is expected. After 3 a.m., rain and snow could fall, with a blustery north wind gusting to 47 mph. A high wind advisory has been posted for Westchester County through 4 a.m. Thursday.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service said strong winds will be capable of producing downed trees and power lines.

On Thursday, rain and snow is likely before 10 a.m., with a chance of rain later in the day. It will be cloudy, with a high of 41 degrees. Wind gusts of up to 47 mph are possible during the day and lasting through Thursday evening.

To prepare for the storm, reader Kimber Frank said she fueled up her car, stocked up on groceries and is "wishing for the best."
