New Castle Reports No Taconic-Related Incidents

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. -Traffic in New Castle hasn't been adversely affected by the major construction on the Taconic State Parkway, Town Administrator Penny Paderewski said.

While the overhaul of the northbound AMVETS bridge will not fully begin until April 1, concrete barriers were added to the southbound bridge on Monday. The barriers reduced the lanes over the bridge from three to two and also tightened the lanes from 11 feet to nine feet.

With construction on the parkway expected to cause backups, the town was anticipating some of its back roads to be used as alternate routes. On Monday, a motorcycle detail and one patrol vehicle were stationed in areas where the New Castle Police Department anticipated there might be some congestion.

"According to our chief of police we have not seen any problems," said Paderewski. "He reported to me that the morning rush does not have any heavier volume on Route 100, but traffic is moving steadily."

After reporting no problems, the department did not issue any additional details on Tuesday. With the heavier construction scheduled to start on Sunday, however, Paderewski said the department will continue to monitor the construction and its effect on traffic in New Castle.

According to Greg Santone, Millwood's first assistant fire chief, the New York State Department of Transportation is expecting to shed nearly 2,000 vehicles in the morning and evening rush hours to alternate routes.
