NEW CASTLE, N.Y. - Despite New Castle Police advising trick-or-treaters to stay off the streets, the town was determined to not let the unusual fall snowstorm ruin Halloween.
We came in this morning and realized that trees were down and wires were down, said Wayne Bass, assistant superintendent of the recreation and parks department. I was talking to [Town Administrator] Penny Paderewski and she suggested that we do something for the kids since we didnt want them going out.
As an alternative, the town and the Chappaqua Central School District worked together in setting up a Halloween Carnival at the Community Center. Children wearing their holiday best filled up the center Monday afternoon in hopes of filling up their bags with candy.
We have a lot of parents who are making donations to help out with this, said Bass. Many residents, not wanting the candy they bought for Halloween go to waste, instead decided to offer the candy to the town for the carnival.
Our neighborhood is just so gone-zo, said one parent. We usually get 200 trick-or-treaters.
Much of the candy was given out to children who played carnival games inside the Community Center. Despite being a last-minute set-up, the town and school district managed to set up about a dozen games, incuding a ring toss and a strength tester.
For younger participants, a showing of Its the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown was airing in another area of the center.
Children and parents were also encouraged to trick-or-treat at local businesses on King Street and South Greeley Avenue. Participating stores included Family Britches, Gail Patricks Café, Pizza Station, EZ Sports and many others.
