CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. Following a contested election last month that New Castles League of Women Voters found itself directly in the middle of, the group held a wine-tasting fundraiser on Friday night in order to continue its mission of spreading political awareness throughout town.
The group invited residents out to the Chappaqua Wine and Spirit Co. to taste a selection of discounted Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, Zinfandels and other styles. Ten percent of the sales went to the League of Women Voters.
Its just a general fund-rasier so that we can put on candidates night and all the other things that we do, said member Jennifer Mebes Flagg. Leading up the election on Nov 8, the group moderated a debate over the ward referendum as well as a candidates night .
According to Mebes Flagg, Friday nights fund-raiser was an attempt by the League of Women Voters to broaden its reach in New Castle. The groups events are typically only funded by the dues and donations of fewer than 100 people.
Weve done two wine-tasting fund-raisers but we did those two in one of the members homes, so were really just limited to the members, said Mebes Flagg. This is our first attempt at broadening our exposure to the community and hopefully getting more people to stop in.
