Murphy Claims 2-1 Independence Party Win

Officials say it could be several days before the results of Tuesday's Independence Party primary are known, but Yorktown Councilman Terrence Murphy (R,C Yorktown) is claiming a preliminary count shows him with a 2-to-1 lead over incumbent Westchester County Legislator Michael Kaplowitz.

Murphy is mounting a bid to unseat Kaplowitz in the 4th District. He waged a write-in campaign for the Independence Party line in Tuesday's primary.  The district includes Yorktown, Somers and New Castle.

According to Murphy, at least 180 Independence Party voters cast ballots in the primary and Board of Election figures indicate Kaplowitz received only 56 votes via machine count.

The Westchester County Board of Election says it will take at least four days to compile initial primary results. The results must then be certified.
