NEW CASTLE, N.Y. Several New Castle residents have reported to police that they are being targeted in a telephone scam. According to New Castle Police, multiple seniors have been contacted by an individual posing as a grandchild who is in legal trouble in a foreign country.
The caller attempted to trick the seniors into revealing the name of a grandchild, which the scammer uses when calling back. Police said the scammer usually tells the senior that their grandchild was arrested in a foreign country and needs a sum of money to be wire transferred to secure the release of the grandchild from custody.
New Castle Police suggest that residents never wire money without first asking the help of a "trusted relative, friend or neighbor." Police are asking that any similar scams be reported at (914) 238-4422.
