The man, Thomas Nastasi III, pleaded guilty in August 2013, according to the U.S. attorney's office, which identifies the companies as Nastasi Maintenance & Construction, LLC and Nastasi Maintenance LLC.
Nastasi, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office, used the money that should have gone to payroll taxes and instead spent it on items, including his Mount Kisco house and $67,000 worth of cigar purchases.
“The crime for which Thomas Nastasi has been sentenced was not a complex scheme. His companies worked on luxury buildings in New York," said U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara. "Rather than remit payroll taxes he owed, Nastasi spent the money buying luxury items for himself. Now, he not only has to pay the taxes he owed, he has to pay for his crime with a prison term as well."
One of Nastasi's companies was involved in contracting work on the Chrysler Building and Rockefeller Center, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Nastasi is also receiving three years of supervised released and must pay a $60,000 fine and restitution to the IRS of $1,593,414, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced.
