Mayor Michael Cindrich said he was "very sad" and added that his colleague fought a "courageous battle against cancer."

Cindrich said Griffin was first diagnosed about three years ago and had surgery. The mayor, who thought the surgery was successful, said he knew in the last few months that Griffin's prognosis was not good. However, he still had hope.

Cindrich, who called Griffin a "tower of strength," recalled his colleague's public service in the village. It included years serving on the Planning Board before being elected to the village Board of Trustees in 2003. Griffin then became deputy mayor in 2010.

As his health deteriorated, Griffin was absent from several village board meetings. However, Cindrich noted that they were in communication with each other.

A Vietnam War veteran who served in the Army and fought in the Tet Offensive, Griffin was nominated to state Sen. Greg Ball's Veterans Hall of Fame. The ceremony, held in early November, included a packed crowd with several family members present.

Griffin is not the only one in his family who has served in elected office. Cindrich noted that his nephew is White Plains Mayor Tom Roach, adding they were "extremely proud of each other."

Griffin's visitation is scheduled to be at Cassidy-Flynn Funeral Home in Mount Kisco on Saturday from 7-9 p.m., continuing the following day from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. His funeral is scheduled to take place at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, also in Mount Kisco, on Monday at 10 a.m.

A burial, with full military honors, is set for later on Monday at Holy Mount Cemetery in Eastchester.

Griffin's full obituary is available here.

Cindrich declined to discuss what will happen to Griffin's board seat but added he will have something to say in about a week.
