A Westchester County Court jury convicted 39-year-old Bronx resident Nathan Irizarry of two felony counts of assault on a police officer, though he was acquitted of two felony counts each of first-degree assault and aggravated assault according to the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office.

The charges came following an incident in which two Mount Pleasant police officers responded to Route 117 near Rockefeller State Park on reports of drag racing in progress in November 2015 at approximately 12:30 a.m., officials said.

The officers attempted to stop a car being driven by Irizarry, but he pulled away at a high rate of speed, officials noted. The officers later encountered Irizarry’s car again on Route 117, when he was stopped. When attempting to remove him from the vehicle, Irizarry put his car in reverse at a high rate of speed, dragging one of the officers approximately 50 yards, striking another in the process.

Officials said that the officers suffered serious injuries that took them off the job for a stretch. Irizarry had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

After being convicted, Irizarry was remanded to the Westchester County Jail. He is due back in court later this year for sentencing, when he will face between three and a half to 15 years in prison.
