Law Has Some New Castle Dog Owners Hot Around the Collar

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. - New Castle officials passed a new law that prohibits a person from having more than three dogs with them at any one time in any of the town’s parks during Tuesday’s town board meeting.

Town Supervisor Barbara Gerrard said that the law had been passed by the recreation and parks commission almost a year ago, but had not been included in the town’s laws.

“People were operating as if it were under our code, but it actually was not,” Gerard said. “So now it’s official.”

Marcie Meyer, a town resident and dog owner, was surprised when she first heard about the law. Although the law doesn’t affect her, she feels that the law is unwarranted.

“I’m not happy,” she said. “Pretty soon, you won’t be allowed to have dogs in Chappaqua. I’ve lived here for 17 years and it has become more restrictive.”

Meyer’s 15-year-old son, Jack, agreed.“They just keep putting restriction on what you can do,” he said. “There are a lot of dog walkers out there who try to walk more than three dogs at one time.”

Courtney Hazelton, a Millwood resident, was on the same page. “If you have control of the dogs, it shouldn’t be an issue,” she said. “Most dogs aren’t aggressive.”

Martin Gnip, a Chappaqua resident who is affected by the new rule, thinks the rule should be changed.

“I think it’s nonsense,” he said. “I think they have bigger things to worry about.”
