Irene Causes Major Flooding in Chappaqua

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y.— The low-lying downtown Chappaqua area is prone to flooding even after a heavy rain shower. Tropical Storm Irene brought nearly a foot of rain in 24 hours, causing much of South Greeley Avenue to seriously flood.

The water caused damage to a few local businesses. Emmary Day Spa, which is a few feet below the ground surface, was devastated by the flash flooding. The 10-12 inches of water damaged its hardwood floors and most of its service equipment.

“The owner (Susan Bierne) came here yesterday for 12 hours and ripped up the floor with her father,” said Tracy Merolli, who works at the spa. “There was about a foot of water in here, look at the water line. She was here pumping and a wet vac’ing, trying to get all the water out. It’s really sad to see.”

Diagonally across from Emmary Day Spa, Squire’s clothing store suffered major damage as well after it was inundated with water.

“I’ve got a huge loss right now,” said Squire’s owner Michael Kirchner. “I’m just trying to recover.”

South Greeley Avenue has a history of flooding that has caused water damage. In fact, many businesses have raised their elevation over the years to prevent against flooding.

“That place (Emmary Day Spa) always gets it bad,” said Kirk Sprenger, manager of Chappaqua Wine and Spirits around the corner on King Street. “When Hurricane Floyd hit Greeley flooded, even during Nor’easters. That’s a tough spot there.”

While South Greeley businesses are dealing with varying degrees of water damage, businesses on King Street are without power and could be for a few days.
