This time of the year means one thing for kids---fireworks shows and sparklers in the backyard. Those celebratory firecrackers are very dangerous. Trained fire professionals urge you and your young ones to use extreme caution.
Common sense prevails, said Russell Maitland, Chief of the Chappaqua Fire Department. We want people to know that fireworks are illegal and dangerous and could cause significant injuries. This is what we preach at our fire prevention events at the Chappaqua Schools.
Despite the illegality of fireworks in New York, there will undoubtedly be people purchasing sparklers, firecrackers and roman candles this weekend.
Its so illegal that people find boat clubs and civic organizations around here to set them off, said assistant chief Greg Santone. We recommend that no one set off their own fireworks without trained supervision.
As for your pets, here are three simple tips to shelter your dog or cat from the loud booms and vibrates from this weekends festivities.
- 1. Play music loud to help keep out the sound of the fireworks.
- 2. Keep them in one room with the air conditioning on to keep them calm and cool.
- 3. Check with your vet first but Dr. Martin Kaufman of the New Castle Veterinary Hospital recommends giving Benadryl to your pet take the edge off if the sound of fireworks is making them howl like hound.
