Fireworks Light Up the Sky at Greeley Homecoming

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. – No, it was not the Fourth of July. The fireworks that lit up the chilly night sky over Horace Greeley High School Friday were only part of day one of the school’s homecoming festivities.

“I think the fireworks are a great way to show school spirit,” said HGHS freshman Chloe Noto, 14.

The display followed a full slate of games, in which soccer, volleyball and field hockey teams were all in action. Following the contests, all of the school’s freshman, junior varsity and varsity athletes were called to the center of the football field to be recognized by their classmates.

“These are the young men and ladies who represent Greeley,” said Greeley Sports Boosters President Jim Nottingham. “The Greeley Sports Boosters wanted to recognize these athletes in a very special way.”

The organization did just that by putting on the school’s first ever homecoming fireworks display. The display was set up by Bay Fireworks and the fireworks were shot from the baseball field.

The Chappaqua Fire Department was on hand to supervise. The fireworks were preceded by an acapella version of the National Anthem, sung by Purchase College alum Taylor “Caruso” Kirk.

The Greeley Sports Boosters also spent much of the night trying to raise money as part of an ongoing fund-raising campaign called “Get Turf!” The organization is hoping to raise $2 million in an effort to install an all-purpose turf field sometime in 2012.

Money was raised from selling merchandise and with a 50/50 raffle, in which half of the donated pot went to the winner and the other half went to the Boosters.

If Friday’s fireworks display was simply an undercard for the homecoming weekend, the main event would be Saturday at 2 p.m. when the varsity football team takes on Harrison High School. Varsity soccer and field hockey teams will also be in action earlier in the day.
