WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Despite the tragic train derailment that took place in the Bronx on Sunday, Dec.1, traveling by train remains safer than traveling by car, according to Time Magazine.

The derailment last week marks the first time in Metro-North's 30-year history that passengers were killed in an accident, Time Magazine said. 

Time's article provided the statistics for fatality rates for different forms of transpiration:

  • Cars/light trucks: 7.28 fatalities per billion passenger miles

  • Commuter/long-haul trains: 0.43 fatalities per billion passenger miles

  • Buses: 0.11 deaths per billion passenger miles

  • Aviation: 0.07 deaths per billion passenger miles
