The public hearing will be Conifer’s latest attempt to warm the views of New Castle residents - which, up to this point, have expressed mostly negative opinions about the proposed five-story, 36-unit building at 54 Hunts Place. The last hearing was Tuesday, Dec. 11.
“It simply is an inappropriate location for a residential site,” New Castle resident Bill Spade said in December. “It would not be comparable to other housing in the area, which would lead to the new residents being stigmatized.”
Several residents echoed Spade’s point of view, which suggested the proposed residential site would stick out, to a fault.
“Conifer Realty is essentially proposing an elephant,” New Castle resident Will Wedge said.
Conifer, which originally hoped Dec. 11 would be the final installment of the public-hearing portion of the process, has had to be patient.
“Hopefully, we will have enough information from Conifer by Jan. 22 to make a decision,” Town Supervisor Susan Carpenter said in December.
However, there is a sense by some that Jan. 22 will leave Conifer Realty’s proposal just about where it is now. Town Administrator Penny Paderewski sees a long road ahead.
“I don’t think this will be the last public hearing,” she said. “I think this is just the beginning. There’s still a lot that needs to be discussed.”
