Chappaqua Turf Committee Expands Donation Goal

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. – The Chappaqua Turf Committee (TCTC), which had originally planned to raise $2 million in private funds to install a turf field at Horace Greeley High School, has expanded its goal and now hopes to raise over $3 million.

According to school board member Jeffrey Mester, the additional funds would be put toward bathrooms, athletic facilities, track repairs, an entrance walk way, concession stand renovations, press box renovations and installing lights around the school.

"Anybody who lives near here or drives by here can see sort of a halo glow over the school until 10 at night," Mester said. "They want to change those lights to the same lights that would theoretically be put on the football field."

Mester said the project is not all or nothing, and the first $2 million would be put toward the field, with the newly proposed projects being carried out after.

"Once we get approval, the priority is really to get turf down and all the other pieces are based on the donation," said Assistant Superintendent for Business John Chow.

The amended turf contract was added to the agenda at Tuesday night's board of education meeting and received unanimous approval.

TCTC recently announced it has raised over $400,000 for the project, with most of the funds coming from private donations. To encourage donations, the group has been selling bricks for a walkway that will run from the parking lot to the field. Donors have the option of inscribing their names on the bricks.

The group has also received money through fund-raisers, merchandise sales, and a 50/50 raffle at this year’s homecoming, in which half of the donated pot went to the Boosters and the other half went to the winner.

Encouraged by the donations, president Jim Nottingham is still hoping to make the TCTC’s turf field dream a reality by September 2012.
