Chappaqua Train Station Renovation Back On Track

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. - Renovation work for a possible Chappaqua Train Station restaurant is back on track after an earlier construction bid hit a snag.

Complications arose from New Castle’s previous low bid because the contractor did not include the town’s required insurance in its construction budget, said Town Supervisor Susan Carpenter.

“We had to reject that and put it back out to bid,” she said.

The Town Board has instead decided to go with the second lowest bidding contractor at $31,050. Carpenter said the company agreed to come down $6,000 from its earlier bid.

“They also made sure that the proposals were apples to apples,” said Council Member Jason Chapin. “That they were going to do the same work as the original proposal.”

The work includes the istallation of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, a sprinkler system, propane and gas locations, plumbing, sinks and more.

Town Planner Sabrina Charney Hull said the Town Board has hired a structural engineer to do a report to determine where improvements need to be made to meet those needs. She said the town is trying to move quickly on the project, but needs the report back before being able to take the next step.

While the renovation will make it possible for a restaurant to take over the vacant building, it has not yet been leased to any specific tenant.

The leading candidate to take over the building is Sutter’s Track 32, which made its proposal to the New Castle Town Board in May. The full-scale restaurant and coffee shop was proposed by Lesley Sutter, who was previously the head chef at The Flying Pig in Mount Kisco.
