The meeting at Horace Greeley High School gives the town’s two boards a rare chance to work together on solving shared issues.
In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the top issue when the meeting begins at 7:45 p.m. will be a discussion about emergency-response planning.
The town’s communication and infrastructure management came under fire during the storm, while many parents praised the school district’s constant emails and phone calls. Town Supervisor Susan Carpenter said she hoped to follow the district's example and expand its alert system.
A discussion of the town’s commercial tax base will follow as the boards look for ways to increase revenue in difficult financial times. School board member Randy Katchis said the district owns many underutilized properties.
“We’ve started to identify all the parcels of land that we have and what the potential uses might be, whether we need to use it, whether they’re commercially viable in any way,” Katchis said at a recent meeting. “We can always bring that forward and see if there’s a benefit for the town or the school to use each other’s facilities, properties, unused assets.”
While not specifically listed, another part of the commercial tax base discussion could be the proposed grocery store at Chappaqua Crossing, which would be directly across from Horace Greeley High School.
Time permitting, the two sides will also discuss possible relief from unfunded state mandates.
The Town Board will enter into a work session following the joint meeting to discuss the sewer extension into Yeshiva, Random Farms, and Riverwoods.
