Chappaqua Rabbi Looks Forward To Rosh Hashanah Celebration

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. -- This year Rabbi Jonathan Jaffe will participate in his first Rosh Hashanah service at Chappaqua's Temple Beth El of Northern Westchester.

Jaffe, who joined Temple Beth El on July 1 and serves as its Senior Rabbi, is looking forward to it.

“I can't wait,” he said.

This year Rosh Hashanah is observed from sundown on Wednesday, Sept. 24 to nightfall on Friday, Sept. 26.

Alluding to the synagogue's large membership, Jaffe also talked about being able to meet more members of the congregation. While he already has met a lot of families, Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, offers a chance to meet more.

Jaffe also discussed Rosh Hashanah plans for Temple Beth El. They include prayer, a kids' service and a Taschlich event at Gedney Park. Taschlich, according to Jaffe, involves symbolically casting away sins, which are represented by crumbs. The event will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25 and will include use of a shofar, an ancient musical instrument traditionally made from a ram's horn.
