Chappaqua Library Hosts 'World's Most Famous Pig'

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. – While most people did their feasting on Thanksgiving, the Chappaqua Library instead waited until Saturday to “pig out.” Visiting from their farm in Bristol, Conn., the library welcomed Farmer Paul Minor and Daisy II  – “The World’s Most Famous Pig” – to help get local children interested in reading.

Sitting in his stroller affixed with an “I Love Libraries” license plate, Daisy II relaxed as Minor told the story of how the “Pig Out on Reading” tour began over a decade ago.

“This pig’s been in newspapers all over the world," said Minor. "He’s not the biggest of the smallest, but he’s the ‘World’s Most Famous Pig.'" Daisy II took over the title from Minor’s first pig, the original Daisy, following her passing in 2009.

“Daisy I and Daisy II got to be so famous all because they love pig books,” Minor said. “They get reading certificates and proclamations from mayors and governors for helping boys and girls read more books.”

Donning a plastic pig snout, children’s librarian Miriam Budin presented Daisy II with an honorary library card from the Chappaqua Library, adding to his collection. The two have visited schools and libraries in all 48 contiguous American states while receiving hundreds of honorary library cards and three “keys to cities.”

After telling their tale, Chappaqua children had the opportunity to pet and kiss Daisy. Pig-themed books were also collected and set up throughout the library theater and were available to check out.
