Bythedale Children's Hospital visits Rotary Club

The Chappaqua Rotary Club recently held its weekly meeting at Crabtree's Kittle House in Chappaqua. Lena Cavanna, Community and Media Relations Director at Blythedale Children's Hospital in Valhalla, NY, urged Rotarians to support the new addition to the hospital.

Bythedale provides physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech pathology to children from infants to 19 years old. It is also the only hospital of its kind in New York to offer an on-site pre K-12 public school that serves more than 130 inpatients and Day Hospital patients, who come from all over the country.

Each child is cared for by the same doctors, nurses, physical therapists and occupational therapists from the origin of their stay until their released. The hospital is also unique in that if insurance coverage runs out but the child is not ready to be released, services will be performed free of charge. The hospital also confronts not just illness but drug addiction or behavior problems as part of their community outreach programs.

Bythedale also has an Eat Well, Be Well program which they promote to elementary school children throughout Westchester County. Cavanna noted that Westchester County has the highest incidence of child obesity in the United States.Information is sent home through the Eat Well, Be Well program to parents to make informed decisions about what their children are eating three times a day.
