World Book Night Comes to Chappaqua

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. - Carrie Dillon hoped to spread her love of reading with fellow Chappaqua residents on Monday night by handing out free copies of one of her favorite books as part of World Book Night.

Dillon, who works at a publishing company in White Plains, was one of 30 local residents who volunteered for the inaugural event -  one resident for each book on the list . Dillon chose one of her favorite books, "The Poisonwood Bible" by Barbara Kingsolver, to hand out.

"I thought this would be a great opportunity to share my passion for reading," Dillon said.

World Book Night began as World Book Day in the United Kingdom and Ireland in 2011. The date was chosen because April 23 is the UNESCO International Day of the Book, which is in honor of writers William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes, who both died on April 23, 1616.

"It seems to be a pretty grassroots effort," Dillon said. "They were just looking for people across the country who were really passionate about reading."

For the event, books were donated by the publishers and delivered to book stores across the country, including 30 to the Village Book Store in Pleasantville. Dillon set up shop in the Chappaqua Library and handed out 20 special edition copies of the book.

"I thought the library was a great place because I thought anyone who's going to the library is already interested in reading," Dillon said. "Hopefully they enjoy it as much as I did and hopefully pass it on to someone else in the future."
