CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. Virginia E. Dwyer, a former Chappaqua real estate agent, died March 22 in Port Townsend, Wash. She was 83.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery chapel in Hawthorne on Thursday.
Born Sept. 29, 1928, in New York City, she was the daughter of William Robinson Epes and Alice Regina Madigan Epes. Dwyer attended College of New Rochelle, later transferring to College of Mount St. Vincent, where she received a bachelor's degree in fine arts. After graduating, she was employed as an art teacher and commercial artist and later worked for her father in his patent office.
She married William J. Dwyer Jr. on April 7, 1951. She worked as office manager of William J. Dwyer & Company, a commercial real estate business in New York City. Dwyer was also a licensed real estate salesman and worked in residential real estate in Chappaqua. Before moving to Port Townsend, Dwyer was formerly a resident of Somers and Chappaqua.
Her interest in literature and genealogy led her to travel to Europe with her sisters, where they discovered their earliest ancestor, Allan Epes, who left a will in Kent, England, dated June 5, 1471. Dwyer was passionate about her family, art, history and current events. She was also a skilled seamstress, carpenter and craftswoman.
She is survived by a brother, Travis Epes, of Riverdale, N.Y.; three sons, William Dwyer III of Port Townsend, Michael Dwyer, of New Castle, Colo., and Patrick Dwyer of Stamford; three daughters, Moira Dwyer Grainger of Cincinnati and Alice Dwyer of Jewett, N.Y.; and 63 nephews, nieces, grandchildren, grandnephews, grandnieces, great-grandnephews, great-grandnieces, and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, William J. Dwyer Jr.; two sisters, Jacqueline Walsh and Mary Epes; and a brother, William Epes.
Funeral arrangements are by Clark Associates Funeral Home in Katonah.
