As co-owner of Maid Brigade, the area's largest home cleaning service, Chappaqua resident Robin Murphy understands the importance of a clean houseespecially when it has the power to lift someone elses spirits.
For the past four years, she has made that happen by distributing regular service donations to non-profit cancer organizations like Yorktowns Support Connection and Putnam Community Cares.
She says the idea to give gift certificates instead of financial contributions was conceived per suggestion of a client who had previously battled cancer. During her bout with the illness, she discovered what a relief it was to have someone else take care of the household chores.
She explained that having your home cleaned by someone else while youre battling an illness adds a bit of healthiness and normalcy to life, Murphy remembered. How could we not help?
Her efforts over time have not gone unnoticed. Support Connection showed its gratitude last year by naming Murphy and her husband and co-owner of Maid Brigade, Gary Murphy, with a Humanitarian of the Year award for their continued efforts to lend a hand.
Murphy also lends her time to other organizations like Pleasantvilles Hopes Door, Hastings Co-op Nursery School and the Chappaqua School District by providing auction items and other kinds of support when needed.
I think people are good and can be counted on to do good things, and I want to do my part, Murphy added.
Murphys commitment to what she calls "neighbors helping neighbors" is not only limited to her community service. She helps reduce the carbon footprint of her company by ensuring that Maid Brigade is Green Clean Certified.
Employees in Westchester, Fairfield and Rockland counties now use vacuums with HEPA-quality filters and microfiber cleaning cloths. Company cars are also embedded with eco-friendly oil filters by local business MicroGreen.
