CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. -- Jeanne B. Irwin, 92, a 48-year resident of Mt. Kisco, died March 24.
A retired physical education teacher, Irwin coached hockey, basketball and badminton at Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua for many years.
She was born Dec. 28, 1919 in Philadelphia, Pa. to Minnie Burbage and Samuel M. Irwin. She received a bachelor's of science degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1942 followed by a master's degree from Temple.
"Miss Irwin," as she was known, came to Chappaqua in 1947. Throughout her 25-year teaching career at Horace Greeley High School, her teams were known for winning, but it was teaching that mattered most to her. "To be a teacher first and a coach second," was her philosophy.
Irwin received many honors during her teaching and coaching career, but her greatest came after her retirement. In 1981, she was named "Distinguished Physical Educator" by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation. Following retirement, she was an active community volunteer, including over 30 years at Northern Westchester Hospital.
She is survived by her friend of many years Peg Wagner, cousins and a host of friends and admirers.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at The Presbyterian Church of Pleasantville. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Pleasantville Presbyterian Church, the Mt. Kisco Volunteer Ambulance Corps or VNA/Hudson Valley Hospice. Arrangements are in care of Clark Associates Funeral Home in Katonah.
