WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Stacy Cohen, a White Plains resident who previously lived in Chappaqua, is doing what she can to rid the world of Alzheimer's Disease.

Cohen was honored by the Alzheimer's Association Hudson Valley Chapter as one of its 2016-2017 Women's Champions. Cohen is one of 12 champions from around the Hudson Valley chosen because of their devotion to the fight against Alzheimer’s.

“Alzheimer’s disease entered my world when my father was succumbing to dementia, and at the same time, my dear mother-in-law was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s,” Cohen said. “I watched as both disintegrated into the trenches of this heartbreaking illness, and I lost two people I loved most in the world.”

Cohen became an active volunteer for the Alzheimer’s Association, working in the Purchase office, serving on the Westchester Walk to End Alzheimer’s organizing committee and performing music during Memory Cafes in Westchester County. Memory Cafes are social outings for people with early-stage dementia and their family caregivers that usually include a meal out with live music.

“I am thrilled that I can combine my work as a musician with my Alzheimer's volunteer work,” Cohen said. “There is a strong music component to the Memory Cafe, and I am honored to have my trio play there.”
