CHAPPAQUA, N.Y.-- Carol Wasserman began her career in public relations before following her passion for healthy eating and healthy lifestyles. Six years ago, she started her own business providing weight loss and healthy eating counseling and coaching, as well as private cooking lessons.
I teach them how to eat better how to incorporate better foods in their diet, Wasserman said. Im not one of these people that say you cant eat this, you cant eat that. I feel like that never works. I have a more positive approach. Oh, try to incorporate more fruits, broccoli, brown rice, things like that. Its all about craving healthier foods and then your cravings start to change.
After a few years in public relations and marketing, Wasserman decided to pursue what fascinated her, eating healthy.
I started fascinating about, because I grew up in a place where you get sick you go to the doctor and you get medicine, Wasserman said. I got interested in idea that you can use food and herbs as medicine. If you eat well maybe you wont get sick and maybe you wont have to go to the doctor. Or if you do get sick, there are other things you can do for yourself food-wise.
After receiving a Liberal Arts degree from NYU, Wasserman returned to school to find out more about healthy eating at the Kushi Institute in Becket, Massachusetts.
Eventually, I learned I could help people, Wasserman said. Before I started my business, friends and family started coming to me and asking me questions. I started giving advice and people soaked up all the knowledge I had learned.
Wasserman, who splits her time between Manhattan and Chappaqua, operates out of two offices in New York, one at 45 West 60th Street in Manhattan and the other on 12 Skyline Drive in Hawthorne. You can also find her at www.gethealthywithcarol.com .
I really believe in the healing power of food. Eating well can prevent illness and it can help you get better.
Although she provides private counseling for those interested in weight loss and families interested in healthy eating, she also does cooking lessons to show people how to make healthy food taste good.
Its really fun to show people the yummy way to make things like tofu and kale and quinoa, Wasserman said. Then they really like it, which is another great way of getting people into healthy eating.
