CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. – Chappaqua resident Vanessa Williams began a run on Broadway recently, as the revival of the play “The Trip to Bountiful” opened Tuesday at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. Both the play and Williams received favorable reviews .

“The Trip to Bountiful” tells the story of Carrie Watts, an elderly woman who longs to return to her hometown, Bountiful, Texas, one last time, while her overprotective son and domineering daughter-in-law—played by Williams—try to convince her to stay at home for good.

It seems William's performance as an irritating relative did everything but irritate the critics.

Entertainment Weekly calls the show “Quietly moving” while calling William’s performance “wickedly funny.”

Hollywood Reporter was not quite as flattering but was still generally favorable, calling William’s performance a “mixed blessing.”

“Williams is a mixed blessing. She’s a delight to watch and looks sensational in Van Broughton Ramsey’s period costumes. But she’s been directed to play for laughs in what essentially is not a comedy,” the review read.

The Associated Press handed in a glowing review, calling the play's casting “splendid” and specifically mentioning that, “Vanessa Williams is politely savage as the preening daughter-in-law, icy without becoming a dragon.”
