Chappaqua's Trevor Kafka Has Unique Hobby

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y.—Five years ago, Trevor Kafka was looking for a way to become more active and physically fit. He saw a Cirque Du Soleil show and said to himself, “That looks cool! I can do that.” Now he is an aerialist and floor acrobat performing throughout Westchester and New York City and teaching young, ambitious aerialists the ropes.

“When I was younger, probably 11 or 12, my parents showed me some videos of Cirque Du Soleil and I was really fascinated by that,” Kafka said. “Then, my mom found this circus camp in (Greensboro), VT called Circus Smirkus summer camp. She was like, “You should go! I’m like, okay?” I had already started a bit of juggling stuff and whatever on my own but nothing really too serious then I went there I discovered aerials and how much I’ve been enjoying that.”

After the Circus Smirkus camp, Kafka found a few places in New York City to hone his new hobby. Now he trains and teaches at World Cup Gymnastics on Hunts Lane in Chappaqua.

“I’m teaching some classes at World Cup for aerial beginners, because there’s really no one else who does it around Chappaqua,” Kafka said. “I have three students and that’s been a lot of fun so far.”

Kafka went through an intense transformation when he began to train for aerial performances.

“When I first started aerials I was not an athletic person at all. Part of the motivation was it was something active and it was something I enjoyed,” Kafka said. “Because it was really fun to me, it just made it really easy for me to be fit and more active. The nature of it really pushes you all the time too to be the best that you can be.”

This winter, Kafka will be attending Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass. He is entering undecided but is thinking of a physics major with a math minor or possibly secondary education.

“Getting into a prestigious circus show would be really cool but this is my otherwise college plan of more normal life choice,” Kafka said.“I definitely want to keep up with it in terms of teaching and performing while I’m in college in the Boston area. It will be a balance between my academic life and my social life.”
