CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. – Hurricane Sandy beat up Chappaqua last week and left thousands without power, but resident Lori Morton knows the damage was minimal compared to her hometown in New Jersey.

Morton grew more than 100 miles from Chappaqua in Lacey Township. While her parents, brother, aunt, uncle and other relatives escaped relatively-damage free, many of its residents weren’t as lucky.

“There are a lot of small homes that are in low lying areas throughout Ocean County. Some of them almost right at sea level,” Morton said. “There’s just hundreds and hundreds of homes that are full of water. A number of them are torn apart. It’s just – I still haven’t wrapped my head around it, honestly.”

Morton, a mom of a kindergarten student, said she began asking for donations from fellow Chappaqua parents on Friday.

“By Saturday afternoon our entire front yard was covered in donations,” she said.

Community members responded to Morton’s request and donated clothes, gloves, cleaning supplies, food, diapers and more. Morton said she tightly packed her truck and delivered the donations to a center in Lacey over the weekend.

Despite the gas shortage, Morton plans on returning to her hometown this Friday with even more donations from Chappaqua residents.

Aurora owner Dawn Greenberg will help with the fundraising process by offering store credit to any customer donating any sort of gift card. If, for example, residents donate a $10 Kohl’s gift card, they receive $10 of store credit. The limit is $25 and the deal will run only on Monday on Tuesday.
