Chappaqua: Home of the Clintons

Chappaqua is a hamlet in the Town of New Castle and ranks among the highest income municipalities in the United States. In 2008, CNNMoney listed Chappaqua fifth among the "25 top-earning towns." The estimated median household income in Chappaqua was just under $200,000 in 2007.

The population of Chappaqua is about 11,200 and it is 9.4 square miles. Portions of the Chappaqua zip code area are located in the towns of Mount Kisco, New Castle, Millwood, Mount Pleasant, Yorktown and Bedford. The Chappaqua Central School District, which is considered among the best in the country, also includes homes in other municipalities, such as Pleasantville.

In the early 1730s, a group of Quakers moved north from Purchase to Chappaqua. They built their homes on Quaker Street. Their meeting house was built in 1753 and it still holds weekly meeting every Sunday. The area surrounding the meeting house, known as Old Chappaqua Historic District, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The home of Horace Greeley, which the high school is named for, still stands in Chappaqua.

The majority of those who settled in Chappaqua were farmers. The area was later a mecca for milk production. In 1846, the New York and Harlem Railroad extended through Chappaqua, and new businesses centered around the train station. The volunteer-based Chappaqua Fire Department is 99 years old and maintains two fire houses.

Many well known people have called Chappaqua home, most notably U.S. President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Others include Academy-Award winning actor Alan Arkin, Kiss lead guitarist Ace Frehley, CNN President Jonathan Klein, boxing historian Bert Sugar, and actors Ben Stiller and Seth Rogen.
