Camp Offseason Heats Up

Summer seems a long way off, but the first month of the new year signals the beginning of the busy time for day camp operators in the Westchester-Putnam-Fairfield area. Camp officials are making preparations to host their on-site winter open houses and to participate in the many camp fairs held in January and February.

The Harvey Cavalier Camp, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary this summer, kicks off its winter with its first open house of the offseason, Saturday, Jan. 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the sprawling, 125-acre campus of The Harvey School in Katonah.

“The first open house is always exciting,” said Chris Del Campo, who has directed the Cavalier Camp since its inception in 1996. “With the holidays behind us and a long winter ahead of us, holding a camp open house in January seems to help us all think that warmer days are not too far away.”

The Cavalier Camp, featuring a five-day program for children 4-14, will be one of many camps planning to participate in various fairs across Northern Westchester this winter, including The Winter Camp Expo, Jan. 21, at the Somers Intermediate School, the Yorktown Camp Fair, Wednesday, Jan. 28, at the Mildred E. Strang Middle School in Yorktown Heights and Westchester Parent Magazine’s fair at the Crowne Plaza in White Plains, Feb. 8.

While he encourages prospective camp families to attend a fair to learn of the many summer options for the children, Director Del Campo advises parents to attend a camp’s open house. “It’s very important that parents meet staff face-to-face and learn about their credentials,” said Del Campo. “It’s also important to tour the facilities to feel confident that the setting provides a safe environment for their child.”
