Aurora's: The Only Fair Trade Shop in Westchester

Dawn Greenberg, formerly a publishing manager at D.C. Comics and Mad Magazine, opened Aurora’s, a fair trade store on April 22 of this year after taking eight years off to be a mother. The sales at Aurora’s go towards the Open Door Medical Center in Ossining and to the Westchester Community Center. Throughout the month of June, 10 percent of Greenberg’s sales on Thursday evenings until 7 p.m. go towards the Horace Greeley Scholarship Fund.

“My first thought was a consignment shop but then one opened in Mt. Kisco,” Greenberg said. “I started to do research and decided to give money to places which are in dire straits.”

Greenberg said she got the idea for a fair trade store in January and thanks to her friends and family, she opened her doors on lower King Street just three months later.

Greenberg also donates a portion of her proceeds to Myan Families, an organization that asks for two donations of $125 a year to send one child in Guatemala to school for a year. She explained that $1200 of the retail at her shop feeds a family of four in Guatemala.

Aurora’s sells nearly everything imaginable that is fairly traded -- jewelry, handbags, lip gloss, nail polish, candles, soup, shower gel, wallets, baby apparels, cocoa beans. Greenberg also sells products made by local artists from Chappaqua like Laurie Berg’s beads and Kate Borman’s earrings.

Greenberg’s shop is the first fair trade store in Westchester entirely dedicated to fair trade items. Aurora’s is one of only eight like it in New York.

“It’s been really great, you just never know,” Greenberg said. “I tried to pick things that I would like and my friends would like but I didn’t think it would become such a happening place.”
